SCCLC

Yeah, the San Carlos Charter Learning Center has its very own Wikipedia entry. Who knew?

Now we all know that they were the first charter school in California and only the second charter school in the nation. Neat!

Motto: The SCCLC is a collaborative public K-8 school community that educates, nurtures and inspires learners to be independent thinkers as well as socially and personally responsible citizens. We pursue academic excellence guided by research, innovation and continuous review.

Public = Free.
Socially & personally responsible citizens = Right Up Our Alley.

Kindergarten

So all through the holidays, on the back burner of my brain, I've been hoping to remember to look into the kindergarten enrollment process at the school of my choice for Jaden. Basically, I thought I was being so "organized," "efficient" and "ahead of the game" by thinking about this so early in the Year of Kindergarten. Ha!

Check this out, from the pdf about important enrollment dates:

Jan. 26 -- attend the orientation where you sign up for tour,

(You must attend both in order to apply, and you receive your app at the tour)

Feb. 14 -- applications are due by 5 p.m.
Mar. 4 -- lottery at 9 a.m.

So in two months and 3 days, we'll know if Jaden is going to be a charter kid or not.

Dear Abby's Resolutions

DEAR READERS: The new year has arrived, and with it our chance for a new beginning. This is the day we discard destructive old habits for healthy new ones. With that in mind, I am sharing Dear Abby's often-requested list of New Year's resolutions -- which were adapted by my mother, Pauline Phillips, from the original credo of Al-Anon.

JUST FOR TODAY: I will live through this day only. I will not brood about yesterday or obsess about tomorrow. I will not set far-reaching goals or try to overcome all of my problems at once. I know that I can do something for 24 hours that would overwhelm me if I had to keep it up for a lifetime.

JUST FOR TODAY: I will be happy. I will not dwell on thoughts that depress me. If my mind fills with clouds, I will chase them away and fill it with sunshine.

JUST FOR TODAY: I will accept what is. I will face reality. I will correct those things I can correct and accept those I cannot.

JUST FOR TODAY: I will improve my mind. I will read something that requires effort, thought and concentration. I will not be a mental loafer.

JUST FOR TODAY: I will make a conscious effort to be agreeable. I will be kind and courteous to those who cross my path, and I'll not speak ill of others. I will improve my appearance, speak softly, and not interrupt when someone else is talking. Just for today, I will refrain from improving anybody but myself.

JUST FOR TODAY: I will do something positive to improve my health. If I'm a smoker, I'll quit. If I am overweight, I will eat healthfully -- if only just for today. And not only that, I will get off the couch and take a brisk walk, even if it's only around the block.

JUST FOR TODAY: I will gather the courage to do what is right and take responsibility for my own actions.

Monster Mommy

I have been Monster Mommy this week, and not the cute game I used to play with Jaden where I'd chase him around and say "Mommy Monster gonna get you and eat you all up!" No, sadly, this is the kind of Monster Mommy who goes from 0 to 60 on the impatience and yelling speedometer.

Once in awhile, I will have a reasonable moment, literally about five seconds worth and say, Mama is out of sorts this week. Mama is struggling right now. Mama this, Mama that. Like right now, I said, "Something is going on with me and I'm not sure what it is yet."

And my brilliant, sensitive little boy replied quietly, "I think you're putting too much on yourself these days. Yes. I think that's what it is."

He pauses.

"And when you use that rude voice at me and tell me to go outside? That didn't feel so good. You should have said nicely that you need to be alone for a minute and can I put on a jacket and shoes and socks and go play in the backyard please? That would have been nicer Mama."

GULP.

Almost Festivus!

While Festivus is very unofficially observed on Dec. 23, it is as good a date as any to celebrate it. I am slacking, totally slacking, as a Seinfeld fan having chosen this day for my first Holiday Open House, as in Hello Christmas Wonderland at my house.

Never fear, I will Air a Grievance with myself. For now, I must share this picture of the first Festivus Pole Lot with my loyal readers.

My darling husband has never seen this episode, so I have put disc 2 of season 9 at the top of our Netflix queue.

I'm a Girl

Hello, My name is Jessica and I'm a girl.

Therefore, I love the girly-retail-heaven otherwise known as Anthro, where I giddily devoured an hour of my life today.

Half aprons? Check.

Dish towels? Check.

Cloth napkins? Check.

Tumblers? Check.

(And you thought they were just called glasses).

I'm not even talking clothes here.
Not sure my blog is big enough for all of my favorite Anthro things.

Symptoms

Jaden slept over at his Nana's last night so "Santa" could do some shopping together (yes two people = Santa). I had plans this morning, more on that in another post, so Jeff went to pick him up. Whereby I found out Jaden is down with another cold/bug/whatever you call it these days. I finally got to chat with my noodle around 2:30 p.m. by phone.

Mama: I heard you're not feeling well sweetie.

Jaden: No, I'm not.

Mama: Do you still have a fever?

Jaden: No but I have a cough. I need lots of water and vitamin C all day long.

Mama: What other symptoms do you have?

Jaden: Oh you know, sore throats, runny noses and bless yous.

A Christmas Morning Basket

Have you been to Organized Christmas yet this season? Here is one of seemingly millions of handy dandy tips to make life easier this time of year: Prepare a Christmas morning basket.

Gather tools and supplies like scissors, box cutter, notepad and pen (for recording "gifts received"), camera or videocam, trash bags, zipper food storage bags (for bundling small pieces so they're not lost) and extra batteries, store in a box or basket under the tree to make opening presents as easy as possible.

Just Can't Get Enough

(Must have Depeche Mode song running through your head)

"Founded in the 1920s, the York Cone Company manufactured ice cream cones and waffles plus selected confectionery items in York, Pennsylvania. In 1940, YORK peppermint patties were introduced locally. Shortly thereafter, demand became so great that all other product lines were discontinued."

Highlights from the corporate timeline:

1975: YORK peppermint patties begin national distribution
