Scene Around Portland: Scooters

Portland loves two-wheeled things, this is well documented.

And now, this darling Vespa has been documented by my camera, as seen on my recent walk around the neighborhood. Wishing you a wonderful weekend friends, we will be taking a tour of the Noodle's new school and working on the campus cleanup and hosting our family for Sunday dinner.

Also, I'll be sending safe thoughts for those of you on the East Coast all weekend long.

xo,
Jess

Ocean Echo Inn

We went on a little getaway with Jeff's mom this weekend to the quaint and quirky Ocean Echo Inn. We did not bring laptops and I only used my iPhone for photography, maps and weather.

It was a fun place to hang your hat for a few days and Betty introduced me to the most amazing fabric store ever: Harts Fabrics, "creative fabrics for creative people." They aren't kidding with that tagline! The selection of oil cloth and vinyl coated fabric alone was mind-boggling.

Tell me about your weekend. :)

Field Trip

Today I am so excited because I am going on a field trip. You can read all about in my guest post at the Green Phone Booth.

I took this photo on my first walk home from school drop-off. It is all uphill and I wimped out last year and didn't do it after the first two weeks of school. I'm hoping to improve this year. But there are pretty things to look at along the way and good music definitely helps.

I researched some screencasting programs yesterday and I'm going to start working on my Picnik tutorial for you. I won't promise a date yet but I'm excited about the idea.  We're off to the in-laws this weekend and we're looking forward to the overdue visit in their new home. I'm also thinking about reorganizing my entire kitchen, like empty every single cabinet and pack up stuff I hardly use and put it the rest back in a more efficient manner. My kitchen is small and lacking useful counter space so it makes working in there very difficult. It is a low-level drive me crazy kind of thing. I'm going to attack it!

Weekends and Fur Elise

Happy Monday friends! I am slowly on the mend, and I did get out of the house quite a bit despite feeling cruddy because a girl can only take so much of sitting 'round in her jammies. Right? So Friday after seeing my doc and getting antibiotics, I took the Noodle to a park and then a movie (darling by the way).

Saturday was my father-in-law's birthday and we met at his alma mater, Cal, for lunch. Afterwards, we meandered over to Jack London Square in Oakland and while we couldn't rent a motorboat as requested by our enthusiastic little sailor boy, we did find a place to rent kayaks. Surprisingly, I am the only one in the family with previous kayaking experience! I was quite proud of that actually. The wind was a bit much for me, so I got dropped off fairly early.

Yesterday was a lovely day spent at home in warm sunshine. I made lemonade with lemons from a friend's tree, and served it to my little guy and our neighbor's son (same age) out front in their clubhouse. You had to be invited, and then you had to sign in to their club in order to enter and then finally you were allowed to decipher the club's name. I helped them write in a cipher*, a most basic substitution kind, which we learned from the Dangerous Book for Boys. I would tell you the name, but then you know what would have to happen. Heh heh!

But none of this is the point of this post. This video is the point of this post:

Rather, the soundtrack to this video is the point of this post (but I thought the video was pretty enough to share, how about that sun flare at the very end?! Love!) While everyone was out swimming yesterday in the late afternoon, I took it upon myself to start trying to learn Fur Elise on the piano keyboard!

This has been a dream of mine since 2003! I have learned the first two bars, is that what they're called? I got stuck because I didn't know where G# was but I have figured it out the sharp (and flat) keys this morning. So back to the keyboard I go after posting this. When I have successfully learned the entire song, I promise to make my own video and share it here on the blog.

How was your weekend?

* Another dream of mine? To be a spy. :)

Weekend Report

Good morning! Our weekend turned out to be bursting with fun. Friday we had a good storm and by the evening, the skies were dramatic! I took a few photos on our way to see Disney's Alice in Wonderland at a school pajama party with pizza. Kid heaven!

Isn't this the prettiest puddle you've seen lately?

Saturday the boys took the dog out for an epic jog with bikes. When they got home, I headed out to Michaels, not my favorite place to shop anymore, but the closest independent yarn stores were 15+ miles away. I managed to find my inspiration after two hours there, but I'll tease you and do a separate post about it. ;)

Yesterday we met a dear friend of mine and her family for an epic adventure at the coast. It was so epic that we completely lost track of time and the hike back to the cars took much longer than expected. The only sour note of the weekend was that we had invited my poor MIL for dinner and she arrived on time, but we didn't. She waited and waited for us at home, but by the time we reached a place with a cell signal again, it was much too late and she rightfully gave up on us. We feel terrible about it and we're scheming a way to make it up to her.

How did your weekend turn out?

* Very harsh lighting conditions but you get some idea of where we were yesterday.

Back in Business

This weekend I hope to do some catching up. Four-day weekends are fun and all, but they leave me rather behind on the everyday things like housework, paperwork, cooking, and the general organizing that a family seems to need to keep functioning. Not to mention, there is a collection happening right next door for the school rummage sale and I'm definitely in the mood to do some purging. Also there has been a lot of Valentine makings going on around here lately, and now I'm in the mood to do some crafting.

But mostly I plan to catch up with my camera because I finally have a new pack of film!

To kick off my hopefully productive weekend, I'm meeting a friend for a cocktail this evening so we can catch up with each other. I can already tell that my plans for the weekend are unrealistic because we have a non-local birthday party tomorrow, plus I have some school volunteer projects to do. It's the old too-much-to-do-and-not-enough-time-to-do-it problem.

What are you doing this weekend?

Alameda Antique Fair

I had the most wonderful day in Alameda yesterday with two great friends. We left bright and early and slowly made our way from the back to the front of the antique fair. The weather was perfect: blue skies, not too cold and not too hot. I got some treasures which I will share with you tomorrow. Mean blogger!

Here are some of the treasures I did not take home.

The Alameda Antique Fair is overwhelming in the most delicious way! This is but a scant half-percent of all that we saw. I can't wait to show you my goodies tomorrow.

How was your weekend friends?

Scene Around Home: Relaxing

This weekend we did a whole lot of fantastic nothing.

There was time for swinging (always and as often as possible) and time for a few projects around the house. We enjoyed wonderful company and two family dinners. I baked with the Noodle and hung some art. The boys became a bit obsessed with a rented Wii game.

The scales of unpacking have finally tipped from more to unpack/less settled to more settled/less to unpack. The shed is loaded, the deck is cleared and we enjoyed quiet family reading time on it in the afternoon sun. A trip to the nursery was made and a few lovelies were purchased at 40% off (a honeysuckle vine, red and white begonias and yellow lantana).

There was even time for silly self-portraits and a crazy haircut situation with a spontaneous visit to Supercuts plus more chopping upon arrival home. Yes I'm crazy, maybe I spent too much time upside down?

If I had to choose my favorite moment of the long weekend, it would be racing home on Saturday evening from the movie store in time to snap this picture. Talk about sweet eventide!

What was seen around your house this weekend?

Lazy Weekend

Hullo!

I am sorry for disappearing on you all yesterday, no poem! I was a) a 'lil sad and b) a 'lil hot so I played hooky. I am now in AC-land (my in-laws) and very relaxed. Kind of like Cali here.

Now there's a gal who knows how to lay low during a heat wave, right? Make nice with some porcelain tile, what a trendsetter she is! I am home guarding the heirloom tomatoes while the rest of the family sneaks in one last swim before bedtime (kiddo) and dinner (non-kiddos). I have a glass of wine, a stack of magazines and three dogs vegging in various places.

Leaving a hungry Italian home alone with an heirloom tomato?
Good idea or bad?

I hope you're all enjoying your weekend, wherever you are!

P.S.  Look what I found on a photowalk last night!

Pinkness

Good morning!

We had a productive weekend. We finally finished getting our things out of the studio and storage on Saturday and yesterday, we made huge progress assembling our outdoor shed that we bought on Craigslist last weekend.

The shed is not a small project considering there isn't a speck of flat land anywhere on the property. It is also critical to my peace of mind because it is a key ingredient to finishing unpacking before school starts next week. So I feel confident we will finish which is in high contrast to how I felt 24 hours ago.

Huge props to my husband for dedicating almost an entire Sunday to something un-fun for me!

I've noticed these flowers blooming around the yard in the past week. There are about five of these across the back fence in the open space. This one is right by my driveway. I love these random bursts of pretty pinkness among all the wild, unhewn areas layered with dirt, random stepping stones, flagstone, pine needles and fallen oak leaves. It's kind of like being the only girl in a house of boys (furry ones too).

What do you think?

Paaarty!

This weekend found me eating cupcakes with my beautiful sister-in-law, shopping for adorable little Japanese things, cracking up with my nephew and unpacking my four large art boxes.

Lulu got these little pins for me after it took me a little too long to understand them.
I am an odd case that way though.

This weekend also found me working my first photo shoot: a first birthday party! I have more than 400 photos to sort and process this week, but here is a little sneak peek.

It was an honor to document this special occasion for a truly beautiful family, inside and out.

Of course, I ended the weekend with our Summer '09 weekend tradition: KLMs (key lime martinis) with my sweetie. I'll post the recipe tomorrow.

How was your weekend?

Late July

My post title does not refer to my favorite crackers, but rather to last night's sunset as viewed from my driveway.

This weekend also included a retro dresser found at a garage sale for $30, a birthday party, unpacking, yard work, the end of the Tour (I get my evenings with my husband back, hooray), couscous with roasted cherry tomatoes, hidden Italian bakeries discovered by a dear friend, smashed thumb nails and key lime martinis.

How was your weekend?

Gouache Me

Buon giorno!

I hope everyone had a nice weekend like I did. Mine included some rest & relaxation, watching my boy climb a rope ladder he made with his Daddy and Nana, visiting with an old friend, riding bikes to the ice cream store, reading magazines and even a little painting.

gouache: etymology -- French, from Italian guazzo, literally a puddle

I used these delicious gouache paints by Pelikan. I plan to get my own set someday -- I think they are magical. I am not an artist or a painter but these colors sure make my brush swirl around the paper in a fashionable way.

You may notice two of my "paintings" resemble the colors around here at Sweet Eventide. It's a very long story but I am working on creating new graphics for the blog and shop so that I will have full ownership of them.

This weekend we also showed our new rental house to our loved ones. We weren't planning to house hunt just yet but one little visit to Craigslist last weekend turned up an opportunity we couldn't resist. It's in our price range, takes large dogs and is close to the Noodle's school. Here is our new front door.

It looks a lot like our last front door. We have a thing for houses from the 1940s, this will be our third home from that era. We will move in about a month. The house is, shall we say, quirky? Yes quirky is nicer than other words. It suits our needs and we're looking forward to making it comfortable.

It's a big week ahead with the last week of school and also, my darling husband is taking a week away from his new job. What do you call those, stay-cations or something? We're hoping to work on our storage units in preparation for the big move and maybe even do a little camping to celebrate the end of kindergarten.

Did you do anything special this weekend?
