Tuesday's Inspiration

Good day! We're halfway through and I thought I'd pause and share a couple of images that really moved me today. I hope they help you have a little mental vacation...

I don't know about you but I needed a little mental getaway. It's still really cold here for a Northern California spring and I'm shivering. I guess California is trying to help prepare me for my future springs in Portland?

As for later, I'm hoping my husband will make me this creamy avocado and white bean wrap for dinner. Thanks again to Traci for the pin.

Scene Around Home: Easter Color

Did you all have a wonderful weekend? Was it colorful like ours?

This year, Jaden learned that Mama does not believe Santa is in communication with the Easter Bunny about anything, much less if you've been bad or good and also the Easter Bunny does different things at different houses. For example, SHE came hopping through the meadow in our backyard and came in our back door, but HE couldn't get in to the neighbor's house so left things for the children in their front yard. Hee Hee. I am pretty sure this is the last year for the Easter Bunny. Certain people were examining the bar codes and urls on the packaging this year!

A Hideaway

I'm thrown off my schedule with the Noodle being gone, you'd think it'd be a big party over here for the parents but we work all day and miss him at night so really, it's kind of an odd experience. As such, I'm looking for a little hideaway like this to get through my work day.

I spied this photograph on Pinterest here and
it was credited to Romantiska Hem on this Tumblr

I actually went to the Romantiska Hem blog and searched through the archived posts back to February searching for a photographer credit, to no avail. It is so frustrating. Isn't it such a pretty picture? Don't you want to know who actually took it? I DO. I want to see more of this person's work. I want to put their name under their photograph, where it belongs. Did a stylist help them set up the shot? Don't you want to know who that hard-working person is too? Didn't they do a great job hanging those paper lanterns in there?

Normally, I would not post this image on my blog. There are many, many, many photographs I find that I would love to share with my readers here, but I can't find the original source so I'm stuck with "liking" it or making it a "favorite"on whichever site I found it on. It's a giant brick wall over and over.

Today I am going to post this uncredited image though because I've been meaning to post about the topic of photo credits for a long while. From time to time, there are posts by other bloggers about how to properly credit photos for use on blogs. The fact is, legally, you should not post anyone else's images without their permission. In reality, blogs would come to a screeching halt if they waited for permission all the time. This has frustrated me many, many times because as a photographer and rule-follower, I try not to use images without permission. But sometimes, an image is so pretty and perfect, like this one, that I will break the rules. It is not the greatest situation, I'll admit it. I imagine you've all seen this poster by now:

(read more about this poster on {frolic!}design for mankind and Design*Sponge)

I really do think it's a complicated situation these days. As a photographer or artist, you welcome exposure and you accept some risk by posting your work on the internet. The risk is that your work will get used without credit or payment, and the payoff is possible exposure leading to payment somewhere along the way. Some photographers and artists grumble about their work being stolen, and that stinks, don't get me wrong. But the safest thing to do is never put your work online. Even so, it could be stolen and used.

I take a moderate approach. I share my work online and I welcome others to use my images with a credit. I minimize my risks of others making prints of my work by uploading small, low resolution file sizes. Recently a photograph I took appeared on Poppytalk, and less than two weeks later, I received an Etsy order as a result. I think this is great, obviously, as I am trying to establish myself and earn a living with something I am passionate about.

As for the uncredited photo in this post, if anyone out there knows who it belongs to, please let me know. I will even go back and leave comments on Pinterest and Tumblr naming the owner so that eventually others won't have to do so much work. Really it boils down to time management. At the very least, are people willing to slow down just a bit to make a note where they found the image and then other people like me can do the right thing and get permission to use the image. What if that Tumblr owner had not just said my source is so-and-so's blog, but included the permalink to the actual post? It would be so helpful.

How do you handle photo crediting on your blog? Are you strict and use images only with permission? Do you plan all your posts ahead of time and wait to get the permission? Do you post images with credits and hope the photographer doesn't ask you to take their images down?

Sweet Birthdays

Between March 29th and April 17th, we have three family birthdays, followed quickly by my son's on May 7th. It is a whirlwind of happy celebrations every year. Here is a tiny glimpse of the weekend, seen through a macro lens I borrowed from work.

It is spring break for the Noodle and he is off in an RV with his Nana. The house is a little too quiet. I found myself writing him a letter at bedtime telling him about my day and turning on his nightlight for absolutely no reason except it is a habit & it brought me some comfort. I really miss him!

Friday? Already?

Why hello there, my poor abandoned blog! It has been quite a week since I saw you last. We had a frigid Little League game last weekend, followed by Sunday brunch for me to celebrate a dear friend's 40th birthday, followed by a dinner at my MIL's to celebrate my husband's birthday, followed by a crazybusy three days at work (one of which was my husband's actual birthday on which the Noodle was home sick from school and mama had a meltdown), followed by some Etsy inquiries which led me to realize my beloved photo lab suffered a devastating fire! Somewhere in all that, I snapped this picture of my dishes drying, of all the things to catch my eye, it was that.

Do you see me in that blue bowl? I think why this caught my eye was because for years, I couldn't settle on "kitchen colors." For years, we have moved around and around and I kept trying to "match the current kitchen." Well finally last fall, somehow I realized it would be best to choose colors I love. And so I have slowly added a few things in "my colors" and lo & behold, this was the random assortment that morning and I realized I am succeeding. I got a jolt of happiness when I saw the colors on the counter. Isn't this so silly and yet, so important too?

Now if you have read this far, I have some news to share finally:

WE ARE MOVING TO PORTLAND AT THE END OF JUNE!

Poppytalk Spring Colours Week: Friday, White

Today I had some rare time to stroll around my little downtown area. I wandered into one of my favorite shops, Prairie. There is always a lot to take in and see, it's a well-styled shop. But today, I noticed the white doorknobs on the dressing rooms.

I love the weathered wood all around the store.

Afterwards, I discovered a new shop but that will be a secret for now because I hope to be bold and interview the owner for my blog! I had a great time getting out with my camera this week thanks to Poppytalk!

Have a wonderful weekend friends...

Poppytalk Spring Colours Week: Thursday, Lavender

Whew! It's been quite a busy day between working a bit on my day off, shopping and prepping for teaching cooking to the Noodle's class tomorrow, picking up the right size of Little League pants, buying some new clothing in size M (8) because certain little boys are growing and aging before my very eyes, cooking & cleaning and hosting a playdate complete with a glorious mess, well this Mama is wooped!

Speaking of a glorious mess, with no knowledge whatsoever of Poppytalk or Spring Colour Weeks, one of our guests today showed up perfectly dressed for Lavender Thursday.

She must love lavender because it found its way into her birthday card for her daddy.
Serendipity!

Exciting Update!
This photo was posted by Jan on Poppytalk today:

Back to the original post...

I simply cannot get ENOUGH of ranunculus this year. The pale pink ones up at the top?
They came home with me.

Are you enjoying spring colour week too? I've been adding pictures daily to my Flickr faves.

Poppytalk Spring Colours Week: Monday, Green

Good day all! This is going to be a beautiful, colorful week thanks to the annual Poppytalk Spring Colours Week. Today is all about the green.

This is my first bundle of spring asparagus. I think it's the perfect way to start off the week.

I will be posting a few more green photos in the Flickr pool later today, but in the meantime, take a little break and go check out what everyone else has already submitted.

Just Because Balloons

Yesterday I surprised the Noodle after school with "just because" balloons. They got quite the reaction from classmates and parents, and later at the park from passersby.

We had a picnic and played with our new giant soft frisbee and went creek walking.
It was a glorious afternoon and I wish you all just that kind of weekend!

Sweet MEventide: Improving an Etsy Listing

Good morning friends!

I'd like to introduce you to my new, regular Thursday feature here on my blog where I will focus on my photography business. It is called Sweet MEventide, and I must give full credit to Erin Loechner from Design for Mankind for suggesting the idea and the witty name. xoxo Erin! :)

As you know, I took a part-time day job almost six months ago and it has taken up most of my energy ever since. I want to shift that balance and focus on my dreams again. I will share with you the baby steps as I take them.

This week, I started with a new listing in my shop. I have a folder on my computer called "Items to List." I have had this Polaroid in there for about a year! It was high time to put it in the shop and I was inspired to do this today because yesterday was our first really warm spring day.

I tried three new things for this listing.

1. I created a color palette from my photograph and using it as one of the listing photos. I created an account on COLOURlovers today for this purpose.

2. I created an example of the photo framed to help buyers visualize it. I give full credit for these ideas to the inspiring women from my Etsy team, the Female Photographers of Etsy. As soon as I hit publish, I used my momentum and went to Statsy Clockbot to schedule renewals of my newest listing.

3. I used the Wikipedia List of Colors to go beyond "pink" in my Etsy tags. I chose "cotton candy pink" instead.

All in all, this listing took one full hour. I suppose it will get faster and easier if I continue to practice. If you have an Etsy shop, how long does it take you to create a new listing?

Pause for Photography: Ranunculus

How much am I loving ranunculus? A LOT, and I'm not the only one, see item #2.

Now tell me, didn't I make you want to run right to the market and get yourself a bunch? Or is it just me?

Inspiration: Purl Bee

The sun came out here yesterday and right now there is a sweet little bird chirping outside my window. When I combine all of that with a cup of coffee and a few minutes on Pinterest, my day is off to a lovely start. I had to share these images on the Purl bee with you because they set my mind whirling & I have set up a little sewing area recently. Hmmm... ;)

Click here for more spring projects and you can see the bunny finger puppet kit post too.

Speaking of supercute, here is a darling photo of a little one with a big ol' camera and here is a precious real bunny. I won't post the photos here because despite some searching, I can't locate the original sources. It's too bad because they are amazing images & I hope you'll take a peek at them.

Scene Around Home: Onions and Lemons

I've got food on my mind lately, as in farm fresh, seasonal food. Anyone who knows me well knows that I'm always into that kind of food, but there is a new season in town. I will get my first farm box of spring this week. I've been hearing rumors of asparagus on my farm's Facebook page.

In the meantime, I've resorted to entertaining myself by photographing my plain old grocery store red onion and my mother-in-law's brand new Meyer lemon tree.

Look at that teeny weeny baby lemon! Do you garden? What do you have planned for your garden this spring?

Pause for Photography: Evie Marie

When I'm not able to get behind my own camera often enough or when life's troubles are getting to me, I find myself searching for pretty photographs to lift me up. This is not difficult to do considering I am part of the amazing Female Photographers of Etsy (fPOE), a group of talented, hard-working, inspiring women. It is through fPOE that I came to Evie Marie's wonderful, light-filled images this week.

I feel like Evie Marie's photographs are a little presents she wrapped up just for me this week. Only now they are your presents too, because she was kind enough to let me share them with you. Oh, and her name is pronounced Eh-vee, not Eee-vee. :)

See more of her work in her photostream, her shop, her blog and Facebook.

Storybird

Good morning!  Over the weekend, I visited Storybird for the first time, after following them for quite some time on Twitter. I introduced it to the Noodle at the same time, and he was very engaged. It is a totally ad-free, safe website for kids and that is important to me. We spend a lot of time vetting out his media exposure (relying primarily on Common Sense Media). Before he felt ready to make his own Storybirds, he wanted Mommy to make one first. So I did!

Now in the future, I will see how many other Storybirds have the title I am considering, ha ha. There are many Storybirds called Lost and Found. That's what you get for being a spontaneous Mama.

I hope you like my first children's "book." :)

Scene Around Home: Cheer

This weekend, I rearranged furniture. I love rearranging our furniture. I cleared a big clutter hot spot from our front room that grew around a desk that wasn't being used for anything purposeful*. I repainted a table that has been green for 6 years and I've wanted to paint it white for at least one. Finally, I just grabbed the paint and went for it! Now there is a place to sit leisurely where once there was piles of clutter.

My mother-in-law brought me those yellow daffodils. Aren't they cheerful? And my beloved plum tree continues to cheer my soul with every glance out a window. Plum tree? I love you.

So this weekend, a little more space, a little more inspiration, energy, hope and yes, cheer. is what was seen around my home. (Full disclosure: I'm still working on finding homes for all the clutter, the piles are now in another room that doesn't greet me when I open my front door each day. It's still progress!)

Happy Spring!

* there will be more to come about that desk, I'm working on giving it some purpose & meaning.
